Mr. Black

The Story Behind "Andean Majesty" – Mr. Black’s Favourite Coffee

History & Origin

Colombian Excelso coffee is the crown jewel of the Andes, cultivated in the misty high-altitude slopes of Colombia’s coffee axis (Eje Cafetero). The term "Excelso" refers to beans sorted by size and quality, ensuring a superior cup. Grown between 1,200–2,000 meters above sea level, these beans develop slowly, absorbing the volcanic soil’s minerals and the region’s dramatic temperature swings—resulting in unmatched complexity and balance.

The Dark Roast 8 profile was crafted to honour Colombia’s bold coffee traditions while elevating its natural sweetness. Historically, Colombian coffee was seen as "too bright" for dark roast lovers, but master roasters proved that when handled carefully, a deep roast could intensify its cocoa notes without burying its terroir.

Why Mr. Black Loves It

  1. Power Without Bitterness

    • The Dark Roast 8 amplifies the Excelso’s inherent chocolatey depth while preserving its smoothness—no acrid aftertaste, just molasses and smoked caramel.

    • "Like a velvet-gloved punch," as Mr. Black says.

  2. A Nostalgic Smoke

    • The pipe tobacco finish reminds him of his grandfather’s study—a hint of leather-bound books and aged whisky.

  3. Versatile Intensity

    • Works as a straight espresso (his morning ritual) or a slow-steeped French press (for contemplative evenings).

  4. The Andean Mystique

    • The spiced orange peel note is a signature of Colombian Excelso—a subtle, unexpected twist that keeps him coming back.

A Coffee with Attitude

Mr. Black doesn’t just drink coffee—he experiences it. Andean Majesty matches his persona:

  • Commanding but refined (like his tailored suits).

  • Complex but approachable (like his conversation).

  • Unapologetically bold (like his decisions).

"Some coffees shout. This one lingers like a well-kept secret." —Mr. Black

Final Thought

This isn’t just a dark roast—it’s a liquid tribute to Colombia’s peaks, patience, and passion. No wonder it’s his eternal favourite.

Want to pair it like Mr. Black does? Serve with a square of 70% dark chocolate or a cigarillo for full Andes-at-dusk vibes.

About

Joe

The Legend of "Three Shadows Blend" – Joe’s Favourite Coffee

Origins: A Dark & Wild Trio

This blend is a global rebellion against monotony, uniting three iconic coffee terroirs:

  1. Colombian Excelso (Dark Roast)

    • Grown in the Andean cloud forests, these beans are the "base note" of the blend—deep cocoa, caramelized sugar, and a disciplined structure. Colombian coffee was historically traded as "Milds," but this dark roast proves its bold versatility.

  2. Uganda Bugisu (Dark Roast)

    • From the slopes of Mount Elgon, this African wildcard brings smoky cedar, blackberry, and a faint black pepper spice. Uganda’s coffee tradition was nearly erased by political turmoil, but small farmers resurrected its untamed, earthy power.

  3. Ethiopian Unwashed (Medium Roast)

    • The birthplace of coffee rebels with "natural process" beans—dried inside the cherry for boozy blueberry, jasmine, and a fermented kick. It’s the "ghost in the machine" that keeps the blend unpredictable.

Why Joe is Obsessed

  1. "It’s Like a Noir Film in a Cup"

    • The Colombian-Ugandan darkness (cocoa + smoke) clashes with Ethiopian’s fruity chaos—mirroring Joe’s love for complex characters and twist endings.

  2. The Spice of Life

    • That Ugandan pepper note? It’s the "bite" he craves—unapologetic and primal, like his motorcycle rides at dawn.

  3. Nostalgia with a Kick

    • The Ethiopian’s fermented fruit reminds him of aging bourbon barrels in his uncle’s basement—sweet, wild, and slightly dangerous.

  4. No Two Sips Alike

    • Depending on the brew method:

      • Espresso = Chocolate-covered blackberries.

      • French press = Cedar-smoked wine.

      • "It’s a shapeshifter," Joe says. "Just like me."

The Roaster’s Rebellion

This blend was born when a mad scientist roaster (who Joe befriended in a Bogotá jazz club) decided to break all "single-origin" rules. The result? A trinity of shadows—each dark, but casting different silhouettes.

Joe’s Perfect Pairing

  • Food: Charred brisket (echoes the Ugandan smoke) + dark chocolate truffles (Colombian kinship).

  • Activity: Blasting Tom Waits records while repairing vintage motorcycles.

  • Time: 3 AM, when the world feels both heavy and alive.

"Three Shadows isn’t coffee. It’s a mood." —Joe

Final Thought

This blend isn’t for the timid. It’s for those, like Joe, who walk the line between order and chaos—and prefer their cup strong, storied, and slightly feral.

Want to drink it like Joe? Skip the sugar. Let the shadows speak.

Hazel

The Story of Samba Nocturne – Hazel’s Beloved Brew

Origins: A Transcontinental Tango

This blend is a romance between hemispheres—where Brazil’s sun-drenched plains meet Colombia’s volcanic highlands:

  • Brazil Cerrado (Medium Roast):
Grown in the vast Cerrado savannas, these beans are the "golden voice" of the blend—caramelized, nutty, and impossibly smooth. Brazil’s coffee tradition was built on volume, but Hazel’s roaster sought out small Cerrado lots for their honeyed elegance.

  • Colombian Excelso (Dark Roast):
From the Andean slopes, these beans bring the "moonlit" depth—black cocoa, smoldering tobacco, and a touch of orange zest. The dark roast tempers Colombia’s brightness into something sultry and mysterious.

The Medium-Dark Roast 7 was crafted to marry these opposites: enough heat to deepen the Colombian without silencing Brazil’s song.

Why Hazel is Devoted

  1. "It’s a Candlelit Dinner in a Cup"

    • The Brazilian caramel meets Colombian dark chocolate like "flirting across a piano bench"—sweetness and intrigue in every sip.

  2. Whiskey-Like Warmth

    • That silky, aged-spirit mouthfeel? It reminds Hazel of her grandfather’s afternoon storytelling sessions, where time slowed and flavors deepened.

  3. Dual Personality

    • By day: Creamy latte (Brazil’s nuts shine).

    • By night: Straight espresso (Colombia’s spice takes the lead).

    • "It’s my two moods," Hazel laughs. "Sunshine and shadow."

  4. The Roaster’s Secret
Hazel discovered this blend at a Rio jazz bar, where the barista (a former dancer) named it "Samba Nocturne"—because it moves between light and dark like a midnight dance.

Hazel’s Ritual

  • Brew Method: Moka pot (for drama) or cortado (for balance).

  • Pairing: Dulce de leche cookies (Brazil) + orange zest dark chocolate (Colombia).

  • Soundtrack: Bossa nova (day) / moody cello (night).

"This isn’t coffee. It’s a love letter to the in-between hours." —Hazel

Final Thought

Samba Nocturne is for those, like Hazel, who find magic in balance—who want both the sun and the moon in their mug.

Want to drink it like Hazel? Let it cool slightly. Watch how the flavors waltz.

Valencia

The Legend of Abyssinian Sunset – Valencia’s Liquid Obsession

Origins: A Transcontinental Love Story

This blend is a culinary collision of ancient and new worlds—where Ethiopia’s wild coffee forests meet Brazil’s orderly plantations:

  • Ethiopia (Dark Roast):
From the birthplace of coffee itself, these naturally processed beans carry ancestral wildness—blueberry wine, dark chocolate, and sacred frankincense smoke. The dark roast amplifies their primal depth without taming their soul.

  • Brazil Cerrado (Medium Roast):
Grown in the golden savannas of Minas Gerais, these beans are the "calm to Ethiopia’s storm"—hazelnut butter, caramelized banana, and a sunlit sweetness that grounds the blend.

The Medium-Dark 7 roast was Valencia’s personal request: "Dark enough to feel the night, light enough to taste the dawn."

Why Valencia is Enchanted

  1. "It’s Like Drinking a Myth"

    • The Ethiopian’s blueberry-dark chocolate mysticism reminds her of campfire stories from her anthropologist mother’s fieldwork.

  2. The Brazilian Hug

    • When life feels chaotic (as it often does for this travel photographer), the Brazilian’s caramel warmth is like "coming home to a kitchen full of baking."

  3. Shape-Shifting Magic

    • As espresso: A smouldering, berry-laced shot (her 5 AM jetlag cure).

    • As pour-over: A luminous, spice-kissed brew (her sunset ritual).

  4. The Name’s Secret
Valencia first tasted this blend in Lalibela, Ethiopia, as the sun dipped behind stone churches. The roaster joked: "This coffee is an Abyssinian sunset—darkness you can taste." She smuggled a bag home… and the rest is history.

Valencia’s Sacred Rituals

  • Brew Method: Ethiopian jebena clay pot (for ceremony) or AeroPress (for adventure).

  • Pairing: Fig-and-walnut bread (echoes the fruit/nut duality) + a single square of 85% dark chocolate.

  • Soundtrack: Ethio-jazz (Mulatu Astatke) or Brazilian samba-folk (Vinícius de Moraes).

"This isn’t caffeine. It’s a passport to the places my soul lives." —Valencia

Final Thought

Abyssinian Sunset is for those, like Valencia, who straddle worlds—who need a cup that’s both wild and comforting, foreign and familiar.

Bean

The Story of Excelso Oro – Little Bean’s Treasured Brew

Origins: The Gold of the Andes

Excelso Oro is a love letter to Colombia’s coffee crown jewel—the Excelso-grade beans, handpicked from the misty slopes of the Eje Cafetero (Coffee Axis).

  • Why "Excelso"?
In Colombian coffee grading, "Excelso" signifies premium size and quality—beans too exquisite for the bulk market, reserved for those who cherish nuance.

  • Medium Roast 6 Magic
Roasted just enough to highlight the bean’s natural honeyed brightness without scorching its delicate florals. Think of it as sunlight bottled at high altitude.

Why Little Bean Adores It

  1. "It Tastes Like a Sunny Morning"

    • The red apple and honey notes remind Little Bean of licking the spoon from their abuela’s apple empanada filling—pure, sweet joy.

  2. Gentle Enough for Tiny Sips

    • Unlike bitter dark roasts, this medium 6 is smooth and approachable—perfect for Little Bean’s "big kid" coffee moments (half milk, extra cinnamon).

  3. A Family Legacy

    • The floral undertones (hinting at Colombia’s famed Castillo and Caturra varietals) mirror the garden behind their family’s finca, where coffee blossoms smell like jasmine.

  4. The Name’s Warmth

    • "Oro" (gold) isn’t just about quality—it’s the colour of sunrise over the Andes, and the honey swirls Little Bean stirs into their cup.

Little Bean’s Ritual

  • Brew Method: Pour-over with a rainbow mug (drips = "coffee waterfalls").

  • Pairing: Arequipe (Colombian dulce de leche) on toast or a ripe mandarin.

  • Special Touch: A tiny sprinkle of cocoa—"like the volcanoes where coffee grows!"

"It’s my happy juice," Little Bean declares. "Tastes like Abuelo’s farm and birthday parties."

The Roaster’s Secret

This batch was crafted by a third-generation cafetero who believes the best coffee should taste like childhood memories—uncomplicated, sweet, and full of wonder.

Final Thought

Excelso Oro isn’t just coffee. It’s a hug from the Andes, designed for little hands and big hearts.

Cherry

The Enchantment of The Upside-Down Forest

– Little Cherry’s Beloved Brew

Origins: A Coffee That Grows Toward the Sun (and the Imagination)

This whimsically named blend hails from Brazil’s Cerrado biome—a vast, sun-soaked savanna where coffee trees stretch their roots into iron-rich red soil. But why "Upside-Down Forest"?

  • The Name’s Magic:
The Cerrado’s twisted, gnarly trees (called "cerrado sensu stricto") look like they’ve been planted upside-down, with canopies resembling roots. Little Cherry, upon hearing this, declared: "That means the coffee is magic! It pours the sky into your cup!"

  • Medium Roast 6 Alchemy:
Light enough to highlight the bean’s natural sweetness, but deep enough to give it a buttery weight—like "drinking a cloud that landed in a candy shop."

Why Little Cherry is Smitten

  1. "It Tastes Like a Hug from a Teddy Bear"

    • The baked apple and marzipan notes remind them of licking cake batter at family birthdays—warm, sweet, and always followed by giggles.

  2. No "Grown-Up Bitterness"

    • Unlike darker roasts, this mellow, honeyed cup is just bold enough for Little Cherry’s "big kid" moments (served in their favorite owl mug with a splash of steamed milk).

  3. The Cerrado’s Secret Superpower

    • The hint of citrus? That’s the Brazilian sun shining through—proof, to Little Cherry, that "the trees really do drink sunshine!"

  4. A Name That Sparks Stories
Every morning, Little Cherry insists the cup is a "tiny upside-down forest", and the steam is "the trees whispering secrets." (Their parents may or may not encourage this.)

Little Cherry’s Ritual

  • Brew Method: Clever Dripper ("so the coffee can take its time waking up!").

  • Pairing: Cinnamon-dusted banana slices or a thumbprint cookie (preferably stolen from the baking tray).

  • Special Touch: A drizzle of honey—"to feed the forest fairies!"

"It’s not a coffee break," Little Cherry explains. "It’s a cloud break."

The Roaster’s Inspiration

Created by a Brazilian coffee wizard who believes the best brews should ignite imagination—not just caffeine. "Children teach us to taste joy first," he says.

Final Thought

The Upside-Down Forest isn’t just a coffee. It’s a daily reminder that magic grows everywhere—even in savanna soil, even in a small cup, especially in little hands.

Want to drink it like Little Cherry? Stir it counter-clockwise. "That’s how the trees twirl!"

Star

The Legend of Wild Bloom – Star’s Liquid Stardust

Origins: Ethiopia’s Untamed Gift

This coffee is a love letter to Sidamo’s unwashed naturals—beans dried inside their fruit like ruby treasure, absorbing the wild flavors of the Ethiopian highlands:

  • Why "Unwashed Natural"?
Unlike typical "washed" coffees, these beans ferment in their cherry skins under the African sun, creating explosive berry notes and a wild, winey depth. It’s the oldest coffee processing method—raw, unfiltered magic.

  • Medium Roast 6 Alchemy:
Gentle enough to highlight the bean’s floral-fruit fireworks, but with enough heat to deepen the honeyed earthiness. Star calls it "sunshine and soil shaking hands."

Why Star is Spellbound

  1. "It Tastes Like a Forbidden Planet"

    • The blueberry-mango perfume reminds Star of childhood summers spent stealing fruit from orchards—"like licking the sky and getting caught."

  2. A Coffee That Defies Rules

    • The fermented kick (like blackberry wine) speaks to Star’s rebel heart—"It’s not ‘polite’ coffee. It’s coffee that climbs fences."

  3. The Name’s Secret
Star first tasted this blend at a midnight bonfire in the Omo Valley, where a nomadic roaster served it with a wink: "This is what happens when coffee runs wild." The name Wild Bloom stuck—"because it’s untamed, but pretty. Like me."

  4. Shape-Shifting Sorcery

    • Iced: A berry popsicle in cup form (Star’s summer survival tactic).

    • Espresso: A smoldering, floral shot (their "emergency creativity fuel").

Star’s Ritual (Chaos Included)

  • Brew Method: Ethiopian jebena clay pot ("for drama") or cold brew steeped in a mason jar ("for science").

  • Pairing: Goat cheese drizzled with wildflower honey (to mirror the earth/floral duel) or a handful of stolen blackberries.

  • Soundtrack: Psychedelic funk (because "this coffee is basically a Hendrix solo").

"It’s not a drink. It’s a backstage pass to nature’s rave." —Star

The Roaster’s Rebellion

Crafted by a third-generation Sidamo farmer who refuses to wash his best beans: "Let the fruit speak! The earth remembers what factories forget."

Final Thought

Wild Bloom isn’t for the timid. It’s for those, like Star, who crave coffee with a heartbeat—a brew that’s half poetry, half punk rock, and 100% alive.

Brewer

The Legend of City in the Darkness

– Brewer’s Midnight Muse

Origins: A Nocturnal Ode to Two Worlds

This blend is a culinary bridge between continents—where Brazil’s golden savannas meet Uganda’s volcanic highlands under the cover of night:

  • Brazil Cerrado (Medium Roast):
Grown in the "cerrado" biome of Minas Gerais, these beans are sunlight trapped in bean form—caramelized, nutty, and impossibly smooth. The Cerrado’s vast plains inspire the blend’s open, approachable soul.

  • Uganda Bugisu (Dark Roast):
From the slopes of Mount Elgon, these beans are the night to Brazil’s day—black cherry, smoked cedar, and a flicker of black pepper. Bugisu coffee was nearly lost to political strife, but resilient farmers revived its wild, earthy heartbeat.

The Medium Roast 6 is Brewer’s alchemy: "Dark enough to feel mysterious, light enough to still see the stars."

Why Brewer is Devoted

  1. "It’s a Jazz Club in a Cup"

    • The Brazilian hazelnut sweetness is the smooth bassline, while the Ugandan smoke is the saxophone’s growl—a harmony that mirrors Brewer’s late-night vinyl spins.

  2. The Roast’s Duality

    • By day: A mellow pour-over (Brazil’s honeyed notes lead).

    • By night: A French press with a kick (Uganda’s embers glow).

    • "It’s my shift from sunlight to streetlamp," Brewer says.

  3. Nostalgia with Teeth

    • The dried fig finish reminds him of his grandfather’s attic—woodsmoke, old books, and smuggled sweets.

  4. The Name’s Origin
Brewer coined City in the Darkness while walking São Paulo at 3 AM, where neon lights clashed with alleyway shadows—"just like this coffee: bright and dark, all at once."

Brewer’s Ritual (No Rules)

  • Brew Method: French press (steeped for exactly 4 minutes—"like a punk rock haiku").

  • Pairing: Brown butter cookies (Brazil’s sweetness) + blue cheese (Uganda’s funk).

  • Soundtrack: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue (for the highs) or Tom Waits (for the lows).

"This isn’t coffee. It’s a love letter to the unfinished night." —Brewer

The Roaster’s Secret

A rebel barista in Kampala first blended these beans to prove that "Africa and South America could share a stage—and steal the show."

Final Thought

City in the Darkness is for those, like Brewer, who find beauty in contrasts—who need a cup as complex as their thoughts when the world sleeps.
